New York houses
With Stanley Bate, PGH lived on the top floor of 17 East 59th St from 1941–42 and at 17 East 60th St from 1943. In January 1946 she left Bate and moved to 60 East 10th St, from where she could take a short walk past the Church of the Ascension to 28 West 10th St, where Paul and Jane Bowles lived with Oliver Smith, and to 32 West 10th St, where Leonard Bernstein lived. From November 1947 to mid-1953 she lived at 6 East 10th St, opposite the house known as Lockwood de Forest house, decorated with teak carvings produced in de Forest’s workshop in India. When evicted from that apartment for sub-letting, she moved to the second floor of 29 West 9th St and kept that apartment until the beginning of 1963.
